The Sebastian Strong Superhero Lounge mural at holtz children’s hospital
In partnership with the Sebastian Strong Foundation and Leadership Miami’s 4the305 team, Project Roadmap was commissioned to create a Paint by Numbers mural as part of a heartfelt renovation of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Holtz Children’s Hospital, Located within the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Completed in under 100 days, this transformative effort brought the Sebastian Strong Superhero Lounge to life as a vibrant, healing space designed to honor the legacy of Sebastian Ortiz while providing comfort, peace, and dignity to children and families navigating through the challenges of childhood cancer.
This mural became a living tribute to Sebastian’s strength and spirit, painted not just by our muralists Roc Sol, Dee Perez, and Miss Lushy, but also by patients, nurses, hospital staff, Leadership Miami volunteers, and community members. The hands-on, Paint-by-Numbers format turned the lounge into an active space for healing and connection, offering participants a moment of creative expression, mindfulness, and emotional release. With calming music playing in the background, each brushstroke contributed to a sense of unity, bringing a mental break and joy to those who took part in the experience, which is especially meaningful in a high-stress pediatric hospital setting.
The mural was unveiled on Sebastian’s birthday, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was as emotional as it was inspiring. Jake, a childhood cancer survivor and a symbol of resilience, became the first to use the newly renovated lounge and ring the celebratory bell post-treatment, making it a full-circle moment that underscored the mural’s profound impact.
As the first mural of its kind in the unit, this project now stands as a permanent focal point and model for how art can be used to humanize medical environments. It brought together a coalition of mission-driven partners, including the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Medical Center, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, volunteers and donors. It also served as a meaningful activation within the Leadership Miami® program, which empowers emerging leaders through immersive service projects that address vital needs in the local community.
This mural is a testament to the power of art to heal, connect, and uplift. It stands as a lasting tribute to Sebastian’s legacy and a reminder that creativity can bring light even in the darkest moments. When art is rooted in purpose and community, it becomes something truly transformational.
